Our Annual Gingerbread Kids is a FREE Epilepsy Education Forum and Community Building event. Children ages 3 and older will participate in holiday activities like decorating gingerbread houses and craft projects while enjoying holiday music, snacks and cocoa.

Parents and caregivers will be nearby with a panel of experts discussing this year’s theme of Transitioning from a Pediatric Health Care Setting to an Adult Health Care Setting. Parents and caregivers are invited to ask questions to the experts, connect with the panel speakers individually, meet the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego staff members and build connections with other community members.

Our EFSDC Social Worker, Educator and Field Instructor Kelley Grimes will facilitate the panel of experts including:

  • Dr. Taha Gholipor – Adult Epileptologist and Assistant Professor at UCSD
  • Dr. Olivia Kim-McManus – Pediatric Epileptologist at Rady Children’s Hospital & Associate Clinical Professor at UCSD
  • Dr. David Lee – Adult Epileptologist at UCSD
  • Dr. Katie Sweeny – Associate Chief Nursing Officer at Rady Children’s Hospital
  • Sarah Waters, MSW, ASW, EFSDC Programs and Client Services Manager – Lived Experience

NEW THIS YEAR…Teens (ages 13 to 17) living with epilepsy are invited to gather with the parents, caregivers, and field experts for the first hour of the Education Forum to engage in the panel discussion. Following the discussion, teens will join the “teen” craft room to build connections with other teens, participate in a supportive and facilitated conversation, and of course, decorate gingerbread houses and make other holiday crafts.

There is no greater feeling of isolation than being a parent who receives an epilepsy diagnosis for their child or teenager. In their darkest moment, what makes the difference between desperate isolation and hope is support and understanding.

This is why the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County provides programs and services to clients and their families at no charge. This is why support therapy groups and counseling are so critical for those dealing with a diagnosis. Just knowing you are not alone and being surround by others who have been through this makes all the difference in the world.

Gingerbread Kids is a free Epilepsy Education Forum and Family Event hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County that gathers families for a day of knowledge, sharing, nurturing, diversion and community celebration.
